It is not clear when people first discovered the benefits of mixing clay with graphite in crucibles. The German scholar Georgius Agricola was the first to write a report on Passau/Hafnerzell crucibles for melting metals before 1556. Adding graphite to ceramics made them waterproof even without glazing and improved heat conduction. It can be assumed that the first production of graphite crucibles in a clay body took place in the “Kropfmühl” region. Historically, the Celts used graphite to produce ceramics as early as 2,500 years ago.
Carbon brushes are manufactured using a process known as “powder metallurgy technology”. Producing metal products and materials with powder metallurgy technology involves mixing several types of metal powder in the correct proportions, placing the mixture in a mold, pressing it under high pressure, and then sintering it in a furnace at a temperature below the melting point of the metals. The term “powder metallurgy technology” is also often used to describe processes involving components other than metal powder, such as carbon and oxide powder.
